Over the Rhine

Mural of a girl with outstretched arms

Settled primarily by German immigrants in the 1830s–1850s, this neighborhood was separated from downtown Cincinnati by the Miami & Erie Canal. Residents frequently crossed this canal, which they called the "Rhine," after the river in Germany, to get to work, leading to the name "Over-the-Rhine" (or “OTR”).

OTR is recognized as one of the most intact urban historic districts in the United States.

Beginning in the early 2000s, a huge effort to restore and revitalize OTR was begun. Today, it is a vibrant neighborhood with many trendy bards, restaurants, shops and entertainment options.

OTR is anchored by the historic Music Hall, Memorial Hall and Washington Park.
